Why the Second Coming of Jesus Is Happening Right Now

BY Keith Giles

If you’ve ever sat through a youth group lock-in watching apocalyptic movies about the Antichrist, 100-pound hailstones, or beast armies crawling out of bottomless pits, then you probably know the fear of waking up in a cold sweat at 3 a.m. wondering if you’ve been “left behind.”

I know it well. I lived it. Maybe you did, too.

But, what if the Second Coming of Christ isn’t something we need to fear—or even wait for? What if Jesus has already returned, just not in the way we expected?

That’s not a rhetorical question. It’s the entire premise of what I’m about to walk you through.

Let’s dive in.

Stop Looking to the Sky—Look Around You

For over a hundred years now, American Christianity has been dominated by End Times hysteria. Thanks to the rise of Dispensationalism in the 1830s—a theology cooked up by John Nelson Darby after falling off a horse and having a few too many prophetic dreams—we’ve inherited a worldview that expects Jesus to ride down on a cloud, sword in hand, to wrap things up any minute now.

The problem? He already came.

Not on a cloud, not with a sword—but through the Holy Spirit, poured out into his people. If we really believe Jesus lives in us (Gal. 2:20), then the presence of Christ isn’t future tense. It’s here. It’s now. It’s embodied.

The Second Coming isn’t pending. It’s present. It’s not delayed—it’s distributed.

The “Second Coming” Is You and Me

You know how Jesus said, “Where two or more are gathered in my name, I am there with them”? (Matt. 18:20) That wasn’t metaphorical poetry. It was an ecclesiological mic drop.

When we live in the way of Jesus—loving our enemies, feeding the poor, breaking bread with outsiders—we are literally the body of Christ in the world (1 Cor. 12:27). That means Christ has returned every time you act in his name, every time you love without condition, and every time the Church chooses mercy over judgment.

So no, Jesus isn’t hiding behind a cloud waiting to zap us into glory. He’s alive and active through his people—if we’d only stop looking for a dramatic entrance and start living out his presence.

What About All Those “Signs”?

You might be thinking, “But what about the wars and rumors of wars? The blood moons? The Temple rebuild?” Great questions.

Turns out, most of those “prophecies” people point to were already fulfilled—in the first century. Yep. Jesus wasn’t predicting events thousands of years into the future. He was warning his own generation about the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

And guess what? It happened. The Temple was destroyed. The city burned. The sacrifices ended. Just like he said.

Jesus’ “coming” in judgment already took place within a generation of his ministry (see Matt. 24:34). And if we read scripture through the lens of audience relevance, rather than 21st-century newspaper headlines, it all makes perfect sense.

Rethinking the “End”

So what if the “End Times” weren’t about the end of the world, but the end of an age? The end of the system of temple sacrifices and priestly mediators? And what if the “New Heaven and Earth” is the world reborn through Christ—the kingdom that is within us (Luke 17:21)?

It’s not that the Bible is wrong. It’s that our assumptions are.

We’ve been taught to read Revelation like a crystal ball instead of a love letter. But if Jesus fulfilled the law and the prophets (Matt. 5:17), and declared “It is finished” (John 19:30), then the real question is: What are we still waiting for?

A Better Hope

Here’s what’s more exciting than any Rapture fantasy: that Jesus is alive in you and me. That the Kingdom of God is not in some geopolitical drama in the Middle East, but in every act of love, every moment of grace, and every choice to forgive.

The Scandalous truth is this: We are the Second Coming. We are the ongoing Incarnation of Christ’s presence in the world.

So let’s stop obsessing over timelines and start embodying the truth.

Christ has returned—not as a conqueror in the sky, but as a reality of love in your heart.

Now, let’s stop sitting around waiting for Jesus show up and fix our world, and let’s start living like Jesus today.

Because the world won’t change until we do.
