Better to listen to the Disabled God than the Emperor who thinks he’s Jesus Christ.

Erasma Ibuado-Reyes was deported to Mexico on March 7^th. He has been married for twenty-five years and he and his wife Rosa have four children. Two of the children were born with mitochondrial disease that debilitates the muscular and neurological system. Both are confined to wheelchairs and both were created in the image of God. Though undocumented, Erasma has worked in the US for twenty-years as a drywaller in order to support his family. 

On February 10^th, he was arrested by ICE. Days later, he appeared in Federal court where the judge lauded Ibuado-Reyes as an exemplar family man and hard worker. The judge ruled that Erasma be released until his trial. Instead, ICE took him into custody and deported him to Mexico the first week of March. 

What makes this man so dangerous that ICE, acting as police, judge, and jury would deport him without a trial? The public is left blind to whatever Ibuado-Reyes may or may not have done in another country over twenty-five years ago.  

What we do know is that Erasma has supported his family and cared for his children in the face an unimaginable situation. US statistics report that between half to 85% of parents’ divorce after having one developmentally disabled child. I can only wonder what that rate is with two disabled children. But Erasma and Rosa defied those odds. 

I know firsthand what it’s like to be a sibling and guardian of someone with Prader-Willi syndrome. PWS is similar to mitochondrial disease. My parents remained married, both working as teachers, supported our family of four. Our family never ceased to provide love and the additional financial assistance my sister needed until she passed away a year ago at the age of seventy.

Rosa told a reporter that Mexico does not have the medical resources needed to provide appropriate care for her children. She said she doesn’t know what she’s going to do now that her husband has been deported.

The Emperor, who has mocked the disabled, has destroyed this family’s life. And now, his policies have taken away the financial support these two developmentally disabled children of God desperately need. They are citizens of this country and cannot be dismissed as something other than. 

For those of you who are Christians, which evidently includes the Emperor, please remember that Jesus told you that you are responsible to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, and embrace the ALEIN in your land. For what you do unto these, you are doing the same to Jesus. He did not give his followers an exception under any circumstance. For those who are aren’t Christians, it’s purposeful way to live life.
