Dear American Evangelicals: Your Favorite Politicians Wouldn’t Have Even Liked Jesus

You are sucking at this. (and I did too).

There’s something you need to hear, and it’s going to sting a little.

Your favorite politicians? The ones you post memes about. The ones you claim are defending “Christian values?”

They wouldn’t have even liked Jesus.

Let’s get something straight: Jesus wasn’t running around ancient Palestine lobbying for bigger militaries, tax breaks for the rich, or “law and order” crackdowns, or mass deportations. Jesus wasn’t obsessed with protecting religious power. Jesus spent his time doing annoying things like — oh, I don’t know — feeding poor people, healing the sick for free, and hanging out with the worst kind of sinners and undocumented foreigners.

You know, the very people your favorite politicians trip over themselves to demonize and send to horrifying detention facilities both inside and outside our country.

If Jesus showed up at a campaign rally today, it wouldn’t be pretty.  He’d definitly be heckling, if he didn’t get tackled by security before He even made it to the Chick-fil-A tent.

But let me be honest. I used to suck at this too. There was a time when I thought “good Christians” voted for whoever Pat Robertson told them to, the ones that yelled “family values” the loudest while cutting school lunch programs and locking up refugees. I really thought Jesus needed me to protect Him with a voting ballot.

I thought I was on Team Jesus.

But if you actually read the Gospels instead of skimming the parts you like and pretending the rest doesn’t exist, you notice something wild:

Jesus was political. Just… not in the way your favorite candidate is.

Jesus’ politics were simple:

Find me one evangelical politician today whose platform lines up with that. I’ll wait.

No?

Honestly, most of the people you stan would have been the ones in the crowd yelling “Crucify him!” because He was bad for first century business. Bad for their “way of life.” Bad for the cozy little arrangement between church and empire.

The uncomfortable truth is that Jesus’ kingdom wasn’t about gaining power. It was about giving it away.

The second Christianity requires political power to survive, it’s not Christianity anymore. It’s just empire cosplay with a cross slapped on it.

You can keep worshiping the politicians if you want. But don’t you dare pretend you’re following Jesus while you do it.

Because if Jesus came back today, He wouldn’t be headlining your rally. He’d be flipping your red-hat merch tables.

And He’d start by knocking over the one selling “God, Guns, and Trump” T-shirts.

Congratulations. If this made you mad, you might be starting to get it. Now… do something about it.
